August is here, and Indy is making the most of the last stretch of summer. Before backpacks replace beach bags, there are still plenty of fun events happening around town.
I’ve been enjoying my evening walks, watching the neighborhood from my favorite window, and sniffing out a few local happenings. Here are some events that have my tail wagging this month!
Indiana State Fair
August 7th-23rd | Indiana State Fairgrounds
The Indiana State Fair is one of those traditions that just feels like summer in Indy. Every year, thousands of Hoosiers gather for concerts, livestock shows, exhibits, midway rides, local vendors, and, of course, some seriously creative fair food. Personally, I’d be happy just following the smells around all day. Corn dogs, kettle corn, barbecue…it’s basically my dream afternoon. Dottie keeps reminding me that dogs don’t get unlimited fair snacks, but I think that’s a rule worth revisiting.

Wicket World of Croquet
August 8th | Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site
I’ll admit it, I had to ask Dottie what croquet was. It turns out it’s a lot more organized than the game I play whenever I chase tennis balls around the backyard. This is one of those uniquely Indy events that mixes friendly competition with beautiful gardens and plenty of summer fun. Whether you’re playing or simply enjoying the atmosphere, it’s a relaxing way to spend a Saturday outdoors.

Drum Corps International World Championship Finals
August 8th | Lucas Oil Stadium
The Drum Corps International World Championship Finals return to Indianapolis for an unforgettable showcase of world-class marching music. Lucas Oil Stadium will host the season’s top drum and bugle corps as they compete with incredible precision, athleticism, and musical talent after months of preparation. IndyFringe Theatre Festival
August 13th-23rd | Downtown Indy
The IndyFringe Theatre Festival brings ten days of live performances to venues throughout downtown Indianapolis. The festival features an eclectic mix of comedy, drama, musicals, improv, dance, and original productions from local, national, and international artists. It’s a great opportunity to support the local arts community, discover new talent, and experience performances that range from thought-provoking to laugh-out-loud entertaining.

Feast of Lanterns
August 22nd | Spades Park
Few Indy traditions are as charming as the Feast of Lanterns. This longtime neighborhood celebration lights up Spades Park with lanterns, live music, local food vendors, community activities, and one of the most relaxing summer evenings you’ll find anywhere around the city. It’s the kind of night that reminds you why Indy feels like home.

Cats & Dogs: The Exhibition
All Month Long | Indiana State Museum
Now this one definitely caught my attention. This an interactive exhibit explores the fascinating relationship between people and their favorite four-legged companions. I’ll admit, I have mixed feelings about sharing the spotlight with cats…but I suppose they’ve earned their place too. Visitors can learn about animal behavior, the science behind our friendships with humans, and what makes each species so unique. Honestly, it sounds like a pretty fun outing for anyone who loves their pets as much as Dottie loves me.
