Tax Credits for Replacement Windows and Doors
Learn more about how the Inflation Reduction act of 2022 increases the Energy Tax Credit for new windows this year.
Is there a tax credit for new replacement windows?
YES. Beginning in 2023—as part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022—homeowners can earn an energy tax credit of 30% of the cost of new windows, up to $600 per year. This credit isn’t just limited to 2023; under current legislation, you can claim it each year you install qualifying windows. That means if you install new windows now and again next year, you can potentially claim the $600 credit both times, subject to eligibility and annual limits.
What about Entry Doors?
YES. There is also an updated tax credit for entry doors. You can receive $250.00 per door, with a $500.00 maximum if you install more than one qualifying door in a single year. As with windows, this credit applies each year you install eligible doors and meet the requirements.
Is there a Limit on the Tax Credit?
Currently, there’s an annual limit of $600 for new windows, and no lifetime limit. If you install windows this year and next year (or any future year while the credit remains in effect), you can claim up to $600 each time.
For doors, the annual limit is $250 per door (up to $500 total if multiple doors are installed in the same year).
What are the qualifications of the Window?
Windows must have the “Energy Star Most Efficient” certification. This is an extremely important requirement, as “Most Efficient” demands an incredibly low U-Factor (often < 0.20). This “best of the best” distinction is not the same as a standard Energy Star rating—it’s reserved for top-tier energy performance. If you’re unsure whether your chosen windows meet these criteria, check for the “Most Efficient” label or consult your window manufacturer or installer.

How do I claim my Tax Credit?
Install Qualifying Windows/Doors
The credit applies to products actually installed in the tax year you’re claiming.
File Your Taxes with Form 5695
This is the Residential Energy Credits form you submit with your federal return. A tax professional can help answer any questions about completing the form. More info here.
Keep Your Documentation
Hang on to your receipts and any certification statements confirming the windows/doors meet “Energy Star Most Efficient” standards.
A successful claim can lower your tax bill or even increase your refund—each year that you install qualifying products.
What if my windows were installed before this year?
Under the older credit rules, homeowners could claim 10% of the cost, up to $200 for qualifying windows (and up to $500 total for all qualified energy improvements). If you installed windows in 2022—or otherwise prior to January 1, 2023—but haven’t yet claimed the credit, you may still be eligible to do so.
Already filed your 2022 taxes without claiming? You can speak with a tax professional about filing an amended return if it’s still within the allowed timeframe.

Are the ‘regular’ Energy Star standards changing?
Yes. Energy Star standards evolve periodically to ensure that windows and doors meet increasingly stringent energy-efficiency requirements. If you purchased or plan to purchase products in 2023 or beyond, it’s important to check whether they meet the most up-to-date version of Energy Star guidelines Energy Star Version 7.0. This ensures you’re installing products that qualify for the latest federal tax incentives and deliver superior energy performance.
Are the changes significant?
YES. Especially in the Northern Zone, where U factors to qualify have gone from 0.27 to 0.22. A dramatic jump that will cause many companies and manufacturers to rework their offerings. The change is less drastic in the Southern Zones.

Is there a Limit on the 2023 Tax Credit? How does the new Energystar 7.0 standard affect these tax credits?
The federal tax credit (currently 30% of product cost, up to $600 for windows and $250 per door, up to $500 total) applies to products meeting the Energy Star “Most Efficient” certification, not just standard Energy Star requirements.
No Lifetime Limit: You can claim the allowable credit each tax year you install qualifying products.
Must Be “Most Efficient”: The newer Energy Star standards help ensure products meet or exceed the required performance levels to qualify.
Bottom Line: If your windows or doors are labeled as “Most Efficient,” they should still meet the criteria for the credit—even as Energy Star standards continue to evolve.
