Ward’s Window on Indy in May!

Hey there, Indy neighbors! May in the Circle City is buzzing with energy. The flowers are blooming, the races are revving up, and there’s no shortage of ways to connect with the community. As your resident window guy and proud Indianapolis local, I’m excited to share some of the events I’m looking forward to – perfect for soaking up spring and celebrating what makes this city special. Let’s dive in!

500 Festival Mini-Marathon & 5K

May 3rd | Downtown
Every May, downtown Indy turns into a runner’s dream as thousands gather for the Mini-Marathon and the 5K. The Mini is no joke—13.1 miles through our city streets, complete with a lap around the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Even if you’re not up for the full Mini, the 5K is a fantastic way to join in the excitement without committing to double-digit mileage. Both races are full of local pride, live music, cheering crowds, and plenty of post-race snacks. Lace up and be part of a race that’s as much a community celebration as it is a run.

Bowling for Rhinos

May 3rd | Royal Pin Woodland
Here’s one for the animal lovers (and anyone who enjoys a good time for a good cause). Bowling for Rhinos is hosted by the Indianapolis Zoo’s American Association of Zoo Keepers chapter, and it’s exactly what it sounds like—a charity bowling night to support rhino conservation efforts. Bring your friends, form a team, and enjoy a night of bowling, raffles, and games, all while helping protect endangered species around the globe. It’s laid-back, fun, and a surprisingly impactful way to spend your Saturday night.

Asian Fest 2025

May 10th | Indiana Historical Society
Celebrate the many vibrant cultures of Asia at this year’s Asian Fest, hosted by the Asian American Alliance. This free event showcases traditional dance, music, martial arts demonstrations, and cultural exhibits from across the continent. You’ll also find a mouthwatering selection of authentic dishes, making it a great way to explore new flavors while enjoying the family-friendly activities and atmosphere.

Spring Blooms at Newfields

Now through May 11th | Newfields
If you haven’t had the chance to stroll through Newfields in the spring, now’s the time. Spring Blooms transforms the already stunning grounds into a floral wonderland with more than 50,000 blooming bulbs lighting up the gardens in brilliant color. Think tulips, daffodils, hyacinths—you name it. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and maybe even snap that perfect spring photo. Whether you’re bringing the kids, a date, or just enjoying some solo time, this event is one of Indy’s true seasonal gems.

Zoopolis 500

May 21st | Indianapolis Zoo
Only in Indy can you see a tortoise race that’s every bit as thrilling as the Indy 500—well, almost. The Zoopolis 500 is a beloved tradition where the zoo’s tortoises line up to “race” in their own little version of the famous speedway event. It’s cute, it’s quirky, and it’s a great excuse to spend a day at the zoo with the kids or grandkids. Arrive early for the pre-race festivities, and stay for the animal encounters and activities throughout the day. This one’s always a crowd favorite.

Rock the Junction Craft Beer & Music Festival

May 31st | Westfield
It’s worth the quick drive up to Westfield for this one. Rock the Junction is a celebration of everything that makes Indy’s craft beer scene awesome—local breweries, food trucks, and a fantastic lineup of live music. The energy is great, the pours are cold, and the vibe is 100% local. Even better? Proceeds go to support local nonprofits, so your beer dollars are doing some good. Bring a lawn chair, bring some friends, and enjoy one of the best beer festivals of the season.
